Did You Know...

Film editing evolved from the process of a film editor physically cutting and taping together pieces of film, using a splicer and threading the film on a machine with a viewer such as a Moviola, or “flatbed” machine such as a Kem or Steenbeck.

The first known American filmmaker to put film editing to use was Edwin S. Porter who, after a variety of odd jobs - including electrician in the US Navy - entered motion picture work in 1896; the first year movies were commercially projected on large screens in the United States.

In 1899, Porter joined the Edison Manufacturing Company and soon after took charge of motion picture production at Edison's New York studios, operating the camera, directing the actors and assembling the final print. During the next decade he became the most influential filmmaker in the United States.

Early Edison films were short films that were typically shot in one long static locked down shot. When Edison's motion picture studio wanted to increase the length of the short films he came to Porter. Porter made the breakthrough film Life of an American Fireman in 1902. The film was among the first to have a plot, action and even a close-up of a hand pulling a fire alarm. Instead of using abrupt splices or cuts between shots, Porter created dissolves (gradual transitions from one image to another) - a technique which helped audiences follow complex outdoor movement.

Other films were to follow. Porter's ground-breaking film, The Great Train Robbery, is still shown in film schools today as an example of early editing form. It was produced in 1903 and was one of the first examples of dynamic, action editing (the piecing together of scenes shot at different times and places). Being one of the first film hyphenates (film director, editor and engineer) Porter also invented and utilised some of the very first (albeit primitive) special effects, such as double exposures, miniatures and split-screens.

The one-reel film, with a running time of 12 minutes, was assembled in 20 separate shots, along with a startling close-up of a bandit firing at the camera (pictured below). It used as many as 10 different indoor and outdoor locations and was groundbreaking in its use of “cross-cutting” in editing to show simultaneous action in different places. No earlier film had created such swift movement or variety of scene. The Great Train Robbery was enormously popular. For several years it toured throughout the United States, and in 1905 it was the premier attraction at the first nickelodeon. Its success firmly established motion pictures as commercial entertainment in the United States.
