Sound - audio recording, voice overs
and sound design

The sound studio is available for dry or wet hire – with or without a sound engineer - seven days
a week, and is equipped with state-of-the-art recording equipment to meet most requirements
and tackle most projects.

Be it sound design for video; audio for telephone systems; talking leaflets, books, newspapers and
magazines; ADR – you name it, we can probably do it.

Though our workflow is mainly digital, we have valve pre-amps to warm things up as well as a range
of other outboard equipment.

We use Pro Tools recording and sequencing software and Soundtrack Pro audio utility software,
controlled by a multitrack audio interface with flying faders and transport control surface.

We hold a comprehensive sample and royalty-free music library, but if a project requires something
a little bit different or unique, we can always record and design the sound ourselves!

We've included a couple of voice over examples below...

Long Standing - Naration recorded for Argo Productions.

CDJshop.com - Jingle recorded for Intrigue Productions.

Enter a Man All Covered In Mud - Poem by Alice Oswold.

Did You Know...

In the original film world meaning of the title, as established in the 1970s by Francis Ford Coppola and Walter Murch, a sound designer is an individual ultimately responsible for all aspects of a film’s audio track - from the dialogue and sound effects recording, to the re-recording of the final track.

The title was first granted by Coppola to Murch for his work on the film Apocalypse Now in 1979, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the film. Apocalypse Now was the first multi-channel film to be mixed using a computerised mixing board.

But Coppola first recognised the incredible contribution sound design had to make to the film industry in 1972, when he directed a live production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, where “sound designer” Charlie Richmond was working with Murch on the final cut of The Godfather.

Murch’s other accolades include George Lucas's THX 1138, American Graffiti and Coppola's The Conversation, for which he received an Academy Award nomination in sound. He also mixed the sound for Coppola's The Godfather Part II, which was released in 1974.

In 1979, he won an Oscar for the sound mix of Apocalypse Now as well as a nomination for picture editing. It was while working on the film, Murch adopted the theatrical term “sound designer”, with which Coppola had become familiar in 1972, and along with colleagues originated the current standard film sound format, the 5.1 channel array, helping to elevate the art and impact of film sound to a new level.
